The numbers of first year USQ students residing in the Scenic Rim, Logan and Gold Coast regions who attend Springfield campus are now close to equalling those in greater Springfield.
Students from Beaudesert, Browns Plains, and Gold Coast are enrolling at USQ Springfield in increasing numbers because of the close proximity of the campus and more preferred degree programs being offered.
First year Education student Casey Rose from Beaudesert said she chose the campus because it was the closest to her home and had a great support unit that she couldn’t find at other universities.
'I first heard about USQ when Beaudesert State High School visited the campus while I was in year ten and I have loved it from that time on,' Casey said.
'I always knew I would apply to attend here. I have many friends from Beaudesert now attending the university as first, second, third and fourth year students and some of us even car pool to the campus.'
USQ Springfield Director Mr Doug Fraser said the increase confirmed USQ is becoming the university of choice for many students in the surrounding regions.
'Springfield campus has recently celebrated its sixth birthday and our student numbers have grown from 400 in the first year to an anticipated 1800 plus, by the end of this year,' Mr Fraser said.
'More than 30 percent of our on-campus students come from outside the region, which is a significant boost to the local economy.'
'Without our presence, which is central to the Scenic Rim, Logan and Western Corridor communities, most undergraduate and postgraduate students who are enrolled at the campus would leave the area for tertiary education.
Each year our campus continues to grow and more programs are being offered.
'This year we added the Bachelor of Arts, Education majors in secondary and sport, health and physical education and next year, it is planned to introduce the four year Bachelor of Engineering (Civil).
'These add to our many other degrees, including our unique programs in in accounting and sustainable business, radio and television, and psychology”.
'This growth highlights the need that was present in the local regions for a higher education option closer to home that has now been met by our presence.'
