One of Australia’s leading new music groups will visit Toowoomba on 18 April to perform at the University of Southern Queensland’s next Twilight Recital.
Ensemble-in-Residence at the Brisbane Powerhouse since 2008, Topology is renowned for their full bodied sound which invigorates and rewards audiences with exceptional experiences.
Formed in 1997, the line-up features a distinctive and highly flexible instrumentation; John Babbage (saxophone, clarinet), Robert Davidson (bass), Kylie Davidson (piano), Bernard Hoey (viola) and Christa Powell (violin).
Their performances, recordings and compositions are remarkable, with collaborations across a wide spectrum of artists and genres from Geoffrey Rush and Savage Garden to Katie Noonan, Tyron Noonan, The Kransky Sisters, The Brodsky Quartet, William Barton, Kate Miller-Heidke and electro-pop group Full Fathom Five.
An institution in their hometown of Brisbane, Topology have a strong national and an ever-growing international profile including tours to Canada, Indonesia, Singapore and Europe, with plans to tour India next year.
Their Toowoomba Twilight Recital will feature works from their seventh studio album; Difference Engine.
Using notes and rhythms in place of gears and wheels for the title track, John Babbage has made music inspired by these intricate, mechanical computers.
‘We'll be playing some of our very favourite original music selected for its combination of bright, energetic textures, melodies and rhythms and a little bit of quirkiness,’ said Mr Babbage.
‘Also on the program are the magic of Lynette Lancini’s Sapphire, the beauty in science of X174 and the driving rhythms of Rob Davidson's Exterior.
‘Another interesting inclusion is Rob Davidson singing his own Brisbane Songs, using poetry about Brisbane by Les Murray and Kevin Hart.
‘It's music with lush orchestrations, improvised solos, rhythms plucked from indie-folk song writing and Stravinsky, harmonies not far from Purcell and Miles Davis, with humour never too far away.’
This will be the ensemble’s first visit to the Garden City and the group will make the most of the day in Toowoomba; ‘including a bit of a tourist drive around the area on the way and time spent workshopping with some of the University’s students,’ said violinist, Christa Powell.
‘We’ve heard such great things about USQ and the students coming out of there; focused, energetic, motivated and incredibly resourceful.’
The Twilight Quintet Recital will comment at 6pm in the USQ Arts Theatre on Wednesday 18 April.
