The University of Southern Queensland (USQ) is taking to the track in support of Nathan Assaillit who is completing a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) alongside persuing his dream of becoming a motorsport professional.
Fuel runs through the veins of the Assaillit family with older brother Damian competing in the Bathurst 1000 in 2009 and 2010 and was also a part of the USQ Elite Athlete program.
Nathan is still working his way up the motorsport ladder and will be competing in the USQ supported EL Falcon at the upcoming 2 Days of Thunder at Queensland Raceway, along with a number of other events through the year.
Motorsport and mechanical engineering are a natural fit and each have helped Nathan in his career and study to date.
'I am a third year engineering student and studying at USQ has certainly helped me in the car,’ Nathan said.
‘By studying engineering at USQ it has really helped me understand the basic concepts that I learnt when driving and has brought my understanding of mechanical engineering to a new level.’
Nathan goes into to the race weekend just four days after completing his semester exams proving that you can successfully juggle a sporting career and university study.
Nathan started racing go karts when he was seven, moving up to cars when he was 15 after winning both state and national titles.
He has competed at State level with success and 2012 sees him move to the National Level with an appearance in the Shannons Nationals Series.
Professor Frank Bullen, USQ’s Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Surveying said that the Faculty was enthusiastic to support Nathan and hopes for strong results.
‘For a student to be able to apply what they have learnt in a competitive environment will give them a great benefit to their studies and the USQ Faculty of Engineering and Surveying are excited to support Nathan.’
The USQ supported car will be competing at the upcoming 2 Days of Thunder as part of Nathan’s 2012 campaign. The car will feature at future USQ events.
