New four year engineering degree at Springfield

New laboratories for new four year engineering program at Springfield campus.
Planning is well underway for the construction of engineering laboratories at USQ's Springfield campus.

It is anticipated that the laboratories will be completed in early 2013, in time to be used by students enrolled in the new Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) program.

The four year degree will be a major enhancement to the existing Associate Degree of Engineering andBachelor of Engineering Technology programs already offered at the campus.

Springfield Director Mr Doug Fraser said the Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) would allow graduates to become full professional engineers.

‘With suitable experience they will be eligible to apply to become a recognised professional engineer in Queensland and a chartered professional engineer with Engineers Australia,’ Mr Fraser said.

‘The program develops a higher level of thinking than the associate degrees and is recognised in a number of international countries including the USA and the United Kingdom.’

Mr Fraser said the new program would prepare students for a number of career opportunities.

‘The Civil major provides students with the skills to plan, design and construct and maintain infrastructure such as roads, railways, airfields, irrigation works, buildings, harbour facilities, dams, pipelines, sewers, tunnels, canals and disposal works.

“They will have the opportunity to specialise in the areas of project design and construction or research and development and the program may be awarded with Honours to high achieving students.

‘Civil engineers provide for people’s needs, they understand how natural phenomena behave and plan, design, construct and maintain to suit the specifications and needs of the community.’

Application for the Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) for semester one 2013 can be made through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) with applications closing Monday, 11 February, 2013.
