Communications and Digital strategy expert Karalee Evans had a bit of a different audience last week when she presented a talk on “big data” at the Mathematics Teachers Professional Development Day at the University of Southern Queensland.
Ms Evans said talking with mathematics professionals was a lot different to the marketing teams she’s used to talking to but said her talk was received very well and a lot of interesting questions were asked.
“While it was my first time ever talking to a crowd with a purely mathematical background, utilising big data (very large datasets) requires a lot of maths and statistical analysing skills.
“Coming from a PR and marketing background, it was really interesting to see it approached from a different angle and there were some great questions asked after the talk.”
Ms Evans is the Head of Digital at Text100 and specialises in digital strategy and holistic communications and currently works with clients such as IBM and Optus.
She also took some time to have a round-table discussion with some of USQ’s marketing team to talk about digital marketing strategies.
Other speakers at the Professional Development Day included Steve Sloss, who has 12 years grain and oilseed trading experience, USQ senior lecturers Dr Linda Galligan and Dr Harry Butler, Professor Lindsay Brown and more.
More than 40 mathematics and statistics teachers from schools in Toowoomba and the surrounding region attended the event.
USQ Director of Marketing Helen Nolan said Ms Evans’ talk and responses were insightful and there many interesting topics raised.
