Year 12 student leaders from the local area will descend on USQ's
Springfield campus on Friday (15 February) for the 2013, USQ Youth Leadership Day.
More than 190 students from 14 Ipswich, Logan and Brisbane schools are expected to attend the one-day event aimed at assisting senior students in becoming good leaders.
USQ Springfield Director Doug Fraser said the day is designed to help school leaders inspire their peers and to represent their school with dignity.
‘As part of the day, students will hear an inspiring story from a 2010 Young Australian of the Year finalist, Alissa Phillips,’ Mr Fraser said.
‘Alissa is a Social Innovator for the Foundation of the Young Australians and CEO of Specialised Programs and Community Endeavours (S.P.A.C.E.), a community centre with a special interest in inclusion through creative engagement.
‘As the CEO of S.P.A.C.E., Alissa has spearheaded many innovative and exciting projects that showcase different, grassroots and creative ways to be inclusive from town hall meeting to TV documentaries, 500 person trivia nights to community discos and working bees.
‘She has been recognised for her work with numerous awards including Volunteer of the Year from the Department of Communities in Qld and Kevin Rudd once named her the Top Emerging Leader in the Category of Society and Change throughout Australia.
‘At the beginning of 2011 Alissa was asked by the Foundation for Young Australia to create a national program called Change It Up, aimed at energising and engaging young people aged 16 to 19 years living in regional and rural parts of Australia, who have an interest in sparking change within their local communities.’
Mr Fraser said Alissa was a powerful example of what hard work and initiative could achieve and a fantastic role model for the students.
‘She will speak to the students about her own story and leadership experiences and some of the challenges she faced along the way,’ he said.
‘She is a very enthusiastic speaker and someone the students can really identify with.’
Mr Fraser said the students will also be led through sessions on defining the qualities of a good leader, practical leadership principles and effective communication strategies.
‘The focus of the day is to develop good leadership skills with a focus on inclusiveness.
‘USQ feels privileged to be able to host an event that helps students to realise their potential.’
