Future leaders are being recognised across all three University of Southern Queensland campuses as the university awards a wide range of scholarships and bursaries to deserving students.
The Fraser Coast ceremony was held on February 22 where bursaries with a combined value of more than $70,000 were awarded to students, including Alanna Lehtonen who received the Vice-Chancellor’s Principal Recommendation Scholarship worth $24,500.
The Springfield ceremony (February 27) will see almost $80,000 worth of bursaries awarded to encourage students to strive to attain outstanding results.
Finally, the Toowoomba scholarship awards ceremony (March 4) at the USQ Refectory will see awards presented to about 90 students.
USQ Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Jan Thomas said the quality of the scholarship applicants and winners had been outstanding this year.
“We have some really wonderful and talented students who have chosen to study with USQ,” Professor Thomas said.
“The scholarship recipients are of a very high calibre and I congratulate each student on their achievements and hope to see their determination continue throughout their studies.
“Many of the scholarships are supported by local businesses and organisations and we thank them for their support.”
Toowoomba student Elli Tonscheck was offered a choice between three scholarships to USQ, eventually settling on the Don and Barbara Stevens Scholarship.
The Don and Barbara Stevens Scholarship, with a maximum value of $15,000, is awarded to students who have shown exemplary results in their studies (OP 1 or 2) and is dedicated to the former USQ Chancellor Don Stevens who worked at USQ from 1996 to 2006.
“I never expected I would be offered a scholarship so it came as an incredible surprise when I was given a choice between three,” Miss Tonscheck said.
“I am so grateful to receive the scholarship as it is a reassurance that I will be able to complete my degree while getting the most out of my university experience.
“I hope this scholarship will also open up a range of further experiences and activities to become involved with USQ to express my gratitude for this immense donation.”
