A chance moment in a small village school in East Timor while on a school trip inspired USQ
Chancellor’s Scholarship recipient Alice Foddy to become a teacher in third world countries.
‘While I was in a little village called Soibada, some students from the classroom near our accommodation came down and asked if someone could come up and teach them because their teacher hadn’t turned up for class,’ Alice said.
‘Another student and I took up the offer. Within an hour and with very little understanding of the native language, we had taught the class of high school students to cross multiply and add fractions.
‘This experience was the exact moment I decided to become a teacher and travel overseas.’
With an OP1, the St Augustine’s College graduate had her pick of university degree’s and tertiary institutions, but chose the
Bachelor of Education (Secondary) degree at USQ because of proximity, flexibility and the welcome she received on campus.
‘I live at Redbank Plains, so the
Springfield campus is close to home and when I visited staff were always helpful and approachable. USQ also offered the degree I wanted and gave me options and flexibility in modes of study.’
Alice, who received the $12,000 Chancellor’s Scholarship was one of a number of students awarded more than $78,000 in scholarships and bursaries at the Springfield Scholarship Reception recently (27 February).
‘I am privileged to have received the scholarship,’ Alice said.
‘I feel obliged to live up to the expectations the award implies and it is wonderful to know when I finish my degree; it will be without the worry of a large debt.’
USQ Springfield Executive Manager Doug Fraser said Alice was a great example of the calibre of students awarded at the ceremony.
‘She has demonstrated a strong drive to follow a career in Education and that passion has and will continue to inspire her as she completes her program.
‘I congratulate her and all of the students on their hard work and look forward to following their academic success and future careers.’
