International flavour at Twilight Recital

25 March 2013
Phillip Gearing, Rianne Wilschut and Shelli Hulcombe will be performing at the Twilight Recital on March 27
Recently returned from seven months in Europe, Phillip Gearing is looking forward to adding a dash of international flavour to the upcoming Twilight Trio Recital (27 March).

A widely renowned musician and USQ Senior Lecturer in Music, Phillip will be joined by consummate Dutch clarinettist, Rianne Wilschut and acclaimed Brisbane soprano, Shelli Hulcombe for the classical recital.

“The combination of piano, clarinet and voice is not common,” said Dr Gearing.

“The mix of the velvet tones of the clarinet and the clarity of the soprano voice makes it very appealing.”

The Trio Recital program will comprise a selection of German Lieder and 20th century English art song including a set of German Songs by Louis Spohr, the charming Three Songs of Innocence by Arnold Cooke, the quirky Clerihew Songs by Paul Harris and Franz Schubert’s beloved and lyrical Shepherd on the Rock.

“The Schubert Shepherd on the Rock will undoubtedly be a stand out work.

“It is well loved for its lyrical qualities and the gentle conversational dialogue between the voice and the clarinet; its jaunty close leaves the listener with a sense of satisfaction.”

Both Rianne and Shelli are active chamber musicians, appearing regularly together in the Brisbane-based ARTICO Ensemble and Ensemble Entourage.

“I had the pleasure of performing with Rianne in a recent Camerata of St John’s concert and am very much looking forward to playing with her at USQ.”

Rianne was born in The Netherlands and studied clarinet at the Conservatorium of Music in Zwolle and a Postgraduate degree in Music Performance and a higher Diploma in Chamber Music in Rotterdam.

Since arriving in Australia, she has appeared with the Queensland and Melbourne Symphony Orchestras, Orchestra Victoria, Chamber Made Opera, Astra Chamber Music Society, contemporary music ensemble ‘Libra’ and Operalive.

A graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Shelli also brings with her a wealth of solo and stage experience having appeared with Opera Queensland and a number of national orchestras.

The Twilight Trio Recital will be presented on Wednesday 27 March at 6.00pm in the USQ Arts Theatre.

Tickets are $20 adult, $16 concession, $14 student, $9 child and can be purchased through the USQ Artsworx Box Office on 4631 1111 or online at www.usq.edu.au/artsworx.
