USQ Awards its 2013 Alumnus of the Year

Actor Russell Dykstra is USQ’s 2013 Outstanding Alumnus of the Year.
University of Southern Queensland (USQ) honoured a number of its successful graduates at its 2013 Alumnus of the Year Awards breakfast at Gabbinbar House this morning (16 April).

Actor Russell Dykstra can add a new honour to his CV after being named as the USQ Outstanding Alumnus of the Year.

Russell attributed the nomination to his hard work and career success.

“Never give up, study the particular aspect of the craft you love and go where the work/scene is happening ... do what you love,” Russell said.

“Although it is a challenging occupation because of the insecurity and stress, I would never give it up.”

Russell has previously been honoured by the Australian Film Industry (AFI) as the Best Performance by a Actor in a Leading Role for his work in Soft Fruit and Sydney Theatre Award for Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role for Toy Symphony.

He has been part of other major films including Oranges and Sunshine, View from Greenhaven Drive and Hey, Hey it’s Esther Blueburger; TV shows Rake and Wild Boys; and theatre productions The Adams Family and Baby Teeth.

USQ Vice-Chancellor Jan Thomas said each year the awards recognise former students who go above and beyond in their professional fields.

“Once again I find myself pleasantly taken aback by the accomplishments of and dedication shown by our illustrious alumni,” Professor Thomas said.

“I congratulate the Faculty, Young, and International Alumnus of the Year winners, as well as our 2013 overall Outstanding Alumnus of the Year.

“Russell Dykstra is a fine example of the University’s quality graduates.”

The Alumnus of the Year award criteria encompasses alumni in a broad spectrum of achievements including their professional careers, sporting accomplishments, academic excellence, or individuals who have made a major contribution in community service or overcome significant personal adversity.
