The University of Southern Queensland (USQ) has committed to Earth Day 2013 and has partnered with Sims Recycling Services to offer free computer and IT recycling services for staff and students at USQ Toowoomba.
A collection centre will be centrally located in USQ Toowoomba Quad from 10am to 2pm on Monday 22 April.
Sims Recycling Solution is the world’s largest recycler of electronic equipment recycling all its e-waste in Australia with no illegal exports of waste to 3rd world countries
Mrs Alicia Logan, USQ’s Environmental Officer said that USQ is looking forward to joining the Earth Day movement and is excited to offer additional recycling services in 2013.
“USQ is committed to minimising the adverse impact of its activities on the environment and as such has introduced a diverse range of waste recycling options on campus,” Mrs Logan said.
In 2012 USQ diverted 8.5 tonnes of e-Waste away from landfill. The resource recovery process recovers 95-98% recyclable materials such as steel, non-ferrous metals, precious metals, glass and plastics which are given a second life in manufacturing.
All hazardous material such as lead, cadmium, phosphorous, mercury and brominated fire retardants are safely removed from the waste stream and kept out of landfill.
“I urge all staff and students to think before you throw," Mrs Logan continued.
“We all need to take responsibility for our actions and consider the potential health and environmental impact of waste ending up in landfill.
“By making simple changes in our recycling habits we can start to make a difference.“
