More than thirty teachers and teachers-in-training will gather at
USQ Springfield today (24 April) to attend a visual art workshop with Indian artist Kamal Swami and Australia’s Catherine Parker.
The
Collaboration – Making Art Together workshop, organised by the Primary Arts Network Ipswich (PANI) follows on from the highly successful
Holi Colours of India! workshop presented at USQ Springfield in February.
Springfield Campus Executive Manager Doug Fraser said teachers from local Ipswich schools and USQ students will examine children’s artworks and view the works of Kamal and Catherine during the workshop.
‘They will engage with various media and learn about the Sanskrit language which is an integral part of Kamal’s work.’
PANI’s Lee Fullarton said it was important teachers engage in professional development opportunities whenever they can.
‘The implementation of
The Australian Curriculum: The Arts in 2014 requires teachers to include the arts as a key learning area,’ Ms Fullarton said.
‘Workshops such as these enhance their skills and expertise in addition to their confidence in the classroom.’
In addition to the workshops at USQ Ms Fullarton will be running visual art workshops at Riverview State Primary School in May where students will learn about Indian culture, symbolism and colours.
‘The workshop series will culminate in an exhibition of work from Kamal and Catherine in addition to those of students from Riverview State Primary School titled Drawn to India – A Message from Jaisalmer and Beyond.
An exhibition supported by an Ipswich City Council Cultural Grant will be held at the USQ Springfield Library from 13 May to 31 May.
An official opening will be held on Thursday 16 May from 6pm to 8.30pm. RSVP to lfull12@eq.edu.au by Friday, 10 May for catering purposes.
