New program to build research leaders at USQ

University of Southern Queensland mid-career researchers will be introduced to some of the finest research minds in the country as part of an intensive Research Leadership Development Program (RLDP) over the next fifteen months.

The RLDP was launched in April by Vice-Chancellor Professor Jan Thomas as one of a number of projects under the Collaborative Research Network (CRN) agreement with The Australian National University and the University of South Australia.

Professor Thomas said the program had been adapted from a similar successful scheme at the University of Southern Australia.

“The 18 university researchers chosen will be provided with the skills and capacities that will enable them to develop and sustain high performance research teams in areas such as business, education, engineering, the humanities and sciences,” Professor Thomas said.

“It is always critical we strive towards excellence and research leadership development is especially important for Australian universities as each is challenged to compete on a world stage.”

Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation) Professor Mark Harvey said the initiative was a significant vehicle for enhancing the research culture at USQ.

“The program will nurture a cohort of emerging research leaders with flow-on benefits to USQ’s research strategy,” Professor Harvey said.

Digital Futures Collaborative Research Network Director Mike Keppel said the initiative was an exciting component of the CRN Program of work.

“It will significantly contribute to boosting USQ’s level of research capability,” he said.

Ten individual program days will take place every six weeks over a 15 month period, starting from May 2013 alongside other events designed to promote the program.

The program is cohort driven and will be based upon the identified needs and interests in participants drawn from across the University.
