Sci-fi lives long and prospers
Trekkies from across the galaxy (or at least the Darling Downs) will be beamed up to a new level of understanding on Saturday 6 May following the launch of a new book.
The series that inspired millions, made television history and left a permanent mark on Hollywood and science has continued its legacy, inspiring USQ Senior Lecturer in Computing Dr Penny de Byl's new book.
Penny's book Artificial Life Possibilities: A Star Trek Perspective, which offers a scientific exposé on the cult series will be launched at the Mary Ryan Bookshop (Ruthven St) at 2pm.
Trekkies, as well as those who wonder what all the fuss is about, will be able to hear Dr de Byl share her understandings and the real possibilities of the Star Trek technology, pick up a copy and even get it signed.
In this eye opening exploration of the strange new world of artificial intelligence (AI), Dr de Byl attempts to bridge the gap between fiction and scientific possibilities.
She has arranged the book in a digestible format in a bid to simplify the academic world of AI.
"My main objective in writing this book was to show how many science fiction concepts have fuelled real world inventions", Dr de Byl said.
"I wanted to decipher the terminology and technical aspects of AI, to make it less scary for the average person and suggest a possible future for the research that is currently taking place."
Hollywood's long standing love affair with the world of AI and its potential eradication of the human race leads one to ponder questions of scientific advancement. In today's rapidly changing technological climate it is not unrealistic to question just how feasible the development of AI may be.
"I think most people will be surprised to find out that a lot of the technology found in the artificial beings in Star Trek is already possible", Dr de Byl said.
"In Part three of the book (Soul), I contemplate the idea of artificial beings having emotions, being creative and even being able to crack a joke,
"I think people will be amazed how researchers are actually trying to understand what makes something funny and how they have analysed this for use in programming artificial intelligences".
So if you dream of wielding a phaser gun or operating the holodeck, engage wrap drive and scoop a copy of Artificial Life Possibilities: A Star Trek Perspective and discover just how close your dreams are to becoming a reality!
