USQ welcomes new Federal Education Minister

The University of Southern Queensland has welcomed the appointment of The Hon. Julie Bishop to the role of Minister for Science, Education and Training.

USQ Vice Chancellor, Professor Bill Lovegrove, congratulated Julie Bishop on her appointment and said he is looking forward to working closely with her in the future.

"As the Minister for Ageing, Julie Bishop worked hard to deliver services and programs to older people throughout Australia. I am now excited about working closely and productively with Julie on a range of educational issues," Professor Lovegrove said.

"In particular the University is keen to work with the Minister to shape national education policy and develop strategies to maintain the high profile of regional universities."

Professor Lovegrove said he is pleased the Science, Education and Training portfolio continues to be high profile position within the Cabinet.

"Education brings numerous economic, social and cultural benefits to the community and I am pleased the Federal Government continues to recognise the importance of lifelong learning."

Professor Lovegrove said the University wished the previous Minister for Science, Education and Training, Dr Brendan Nelson, all the best in his new role as Defence Minister.
