Fairholme Junior to attend Circus a second time

After playing with hot ice and setting off pressure rockets at the University of Southern Queensland's (USQ) inaugural Science Circus last year, Fairholme Junior have been quick off the mark to enrol for this year's event.

Fairholme Junior was the first school to register for this year's Science Circus, which will be held from Monday 14 August to Wednesday 16 August 2006.

Fairholme Junior Teacher, Kate Sweeney, said the students were looking forward to the event.

"When I told my class that we would be going to the Science Circus again they said ‘Oh great!' - they are really looking forward to it," Mrs Sweeney said.

"The girls just loved it last year! We saw a number of different things. There were lots of hands-on activities and a lot of displays.

Mrs Sweeney said the students really got a lot out of the experience.

"The students found out that science was fun and could see the relevance between science and real-life, and see how it applies to them," she said.

"They also saw that scientists aren't just people in a lab and that they are actually people living and working in the community."

Nearly 150 students from Grades 3 to 7 will attend the Science Circus from Fairholme Junior, along with students from nearly 40 other schools from across the Darling Downs region.

The event is so popular, that as a result the University has opened up a night time session to the public on Tuesday 15 August from 6.30pm to 8pm. Entry is free and bookings are essential. Bookings can be made through Donna Millett on 07 4631 1643.

Activities include demonstrations, workshops and hands-on activities and are designed for 7 to 12 year olds.

The Science Circus is part of USQ's National Science Week Celebrations and is supported by the Queensland Museum.
