Highlighting career opportunities in Woodenbong

Are you looking for a career rather than a job? Thought University was beyond your potential? Think

again – USQ can help you break out of your cocoon.

On Tuesday 9 May 2006 a team of USQ career professionals will highlight University pathways to High School students and local residents during a visit to Woodenbong.

USQ Marketing Manager, Margo Baas, said the visit follows a successful trip to the region in 2005.

'We were really pleased when Woodenbong Central School Principal, John Charles, invited us back to the school to inform senior students of tertiary options.

'Our School Liaison Officer at the time, Cate Gazal, really enjoyed her trip to Woodenbong last year and I am looking forward to working closely with the region in 2006,' said Margo.

During the visit Margo will present a Generation Y motivational speech that will highlight career opportunities, tertiary study options and scholarships on offer.

This year the team will also provide free career counselling sessions to other residents in the region, during an evening program.

'This is an opportunity for past students and those in the Woodenbong community to talk about their career options with professional Career Counsellor, Joanne Boyes.

'Student Support Officer, Rhonda Hagan, will also be on hand to explain services on offer to indigenous students, through our Kumbari/Ngurpai Lag Higher Education Centres.'

Margo said people are often surprised to learn about the alternative pathways to University.

'Once upon a time University was only an option for school leavers from wealthy backgrounds.

'But nowadays we have people from all walks of life completing degrees at various stages of their lives.

'We have young parents, single mothers and professionals looking to upgrade their skills – we even had someone from Antarctica complete a degree by distance through USQ,' said Margo.
