Science summer school heats up

School may be out for summer but for nearly 100 Queensland boys and girls the learning is just beginning.

Budding scientists from across the state have converged on Toowoomba for the annual Boys and Girls in Maths, Technology and Science Summer School (GMTS³ & BMTS³).

Program Coordinator, Michelle Parry, said this year's program has attracted a large field of applicants from all over the state, including students from Cape York, Wondai, Miles, Longreach and Redcliffe.

"This program is a rare and unique opportunity for students to develop science and mathematics skills in a supportive learning environment. The program is completely free of charge. All travel accommodation and workshop expenses are paid for making the program accessible to students across the state," said  Ms Parry.

The students take part in a variety of hands on activities and workshops including forensics and robotics. As part of the program the students also receive career advice and mentoring during the week.

Both the GMTS³ & BMTS³ are sponsored by USQ and Education Queensland. The girls school is also sponsored by Powerlink.

The initiative began in 1989 with the girl's summer school and has since grown to incorporate boys. Developed as an equity scheme, GMTS³ & BMTS³ provides support for students who may not have access to extra curricular activities in science.

The GMTS³ & BMTS³ commenced January 16 and will close on Friday, January 20.
