Sheldon College win Plate at Super Challenge

Sheldon College, Capalaba, were victorious on day one of the Science and Engineering Super Challenge at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) Toowoomba campus.

Sheldon College beat seven schools to secure the Plate trophy and secure a spot at the National Challenge, to be held in Tamworth during October.

Cavendish Road State High School came second and also won the Virtual Maze Event. Sheldon College, West Moreton Anglican College and Clairvoux McKillop College also won individual activities, with St Saviour's College winning two.

More than 250 students from across Queensland competed on the first day of the state finals.

Another eight schools will compete for the Super Challenge Cup and a place in the Nationals tomorrow (Friday 11 August 2006).

USQ Faculty of Sciences Manager, Harry Spencer, congratulated all schools on their efforts throughout the day and made special mention of Sheldon College.

'All the hard work that Sheldon College have done over the past few months paid off for them.

'All of the activities were based on Science and Engineering principals and I am sure that all of the competitors learnt a lot from today.'

Although the competition was fiercely contested, there was a real emphasis on fun.

'All of the students seemed to enjoy themselves and that was a real part of it, making sure that students find Science and Engineering fun.

'There were definitely some scientists and engineers of the future among these students.'

St Peter Claver College, Merrimac State High School and Beenleigh State High School also competed for the Plate today.

The Science and Engineering Super Challenge, which is sponsored by Rotary Club of Toowoomba East, will conclude tomorrow.
