USQ enjoys ARC success
Five University of Southern Queensland (USQ) researchers are celebrating after receiving over $800K in grants from the Australian Research Council (ARC).
ARC Discovery Grants are an Australian Government initiative designed to encourage research training in high quality research environments.
Research in the areas of mathematics, computing, science and advanced engineering will be undertaken through the grants.
USQ Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Graham Baker congratulated Professor Tony Roberts, Dr Carla Ziri-Castro, Dr Jiuyong Li, Dr Hua Wang and Dr Jesus Lopez on their successful applications.
'On behalf of the University I congratulate all of the recipients as it is a tremendous achievement.
'We now have more ARC Discovery Grant winners on campus than ever before, and this has been our best year in terms of grants won and the total value of those grants.
'This is a significant success for USQ,' he said.
Professor Baker made special mention of the University's accomplishment as a whole, with USQ performing well in comparison to its tertiary counterparts.
'USQ held its own with the ARC success rates, as we had the same average success rate as other institutions.
'These achievements are particularly noteworthy since the growth in the sector-wide applications has meant a sharp drop in success rates to just over 20 percent.'
Meanwhile two other USQ researchers also received grants through different ARC schemes in conjunction with colleagues at other institutions.
'Dr Martine Maron was successful in her application for an ARC Linkage grant, while Professor Andrew Hoey is also part of a project that received an ARC Linkage grant.
'Overall we performed really well and all of these researchers are helping to ensure that we continue to be a University that is helping to expand Australia's research capability.'
The ARC was established in 2001 and continues to award outstanding research projects at universities throughout Australia.
