Engineering information session at USQ

Considering a career in Civil Engineering? USQ is giving community members a chance to hear about all the highs and lows of the profession from someone who works in the industry at an information evening on Thursday 18 January at the Springfield Campus.

From Semester One this year USQ Springfield is offering the only three year Civil Engineering program in the region, the Bachelor of Engineering Technology – Civil (BET).

Program Coordinator, Dr David Thorpe, said the BET is the only program of its nature in the region.

'The BET is the quickest route to a degree in Civil Engineering,' he said.

'With the current and anticipated infrastructure needs of the state the BET also provides good employment prospects upon completion, with graduates qualified to enter the workforce.

'Over the next 20 years, southeast Queensland is expected to invest $7.5 million a day or a total of $55 billion in infrastructure, all of which requires civil engineering and civil construction input.

'As an engineering technologist, graduates will be eligible for membership with Engineers Australia and will have the skills to work in planning, designing, constructing and maintaining infrastructure such as roads, railways, airfields, irrigation works, buildings, harbour facilities and disposal works,' Dr Thorpe said.

'During the session, people considering a career move into Civil Engineering, will have the opportunity to have their questions answered and learn more about their options.'

Civil Engineer, Greg Thexton, will be on hand to share his experiences and answer any questions attendees may have.  There will also be representatives from the University to answer any program specific or enrolment questions.

The information session will run from 6pm -7pm in A6LR1 on Level 6 of the USQ Springfield building in Education City on Sinnathamby Blvd.  Light refreshments will be served after the event.
