Addressing women's issues from a political perspective

Keeping women's issues on the political agenda will be a key outcome of the 2007 International Women's Conference according to keynote speaker Queensland Senator Claire Moore.

Senator Moore is one of ten keynote speakers at the conference on Education, Employment and Everything…the triple layers of a woman's life, to be held the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) Toowoomba from the 26 – 28 September and USQ Springfield on 29 September.

Senator Moore will address delegates on the Friday of the conference speaking on What are the politicians doing for women and what does the immediate future hold?

Originally from the Garden City, Senator Moore said the location of the conference in Toowoomba was a great opportunity to raise the profile of women's issues.

'In terms of keeping women's issues on the agenda Toowoomba will be a prime location because there are a lot of immensely strong women and political women from the area.

'Take Mayor Di Thorley for example. I don't think you can quantify the impact she has had.

'She has been an important voice for local and general issues in Toowoomba. Her impact will be felt far beyond her time as indeed was that of the first woman mayor, Dame Nellie Robinson, who should be remembered for her important contributions.'

Senator Moore said the conference will be important to focus people's attention on issues affecting women.

'Everyone is so busy and there are so many issues to consider. Having this conference – it is getting people focused on these issues.'

The former Branch Secretary of the Community and Public Service Union and current Chair of the Women's Committee of the Queensland Council of Unions exemplify Senator Moore's ongoing interest in women's issues.

Women's activism had quietened a lot in recent years, yet issues affecting women still need attention, she said.

'Women who fought for us to get the vote in the late 19th Century and early 20th Century really showed women fighting for something they believe in.  And when women do that they are extraordinarily effective.'
