USQ announces new Dean of Arts

The University of Southern Queensland (USQ) is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Peter Goodall to the role of Dean of Arts.

USQ Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bill Lovegrove, said the University was delighted to attract such a high calibre candidate to the role.

'Professor Peter Goodall comes to USQ from Macquarie University in Sydney where he is currently the Deputy Dean of the Division of Humanities.

'Highly experienced and well-respected, Professor Goodall is an innovative teacher, an accomplished researcher and an effective manager.'

Professor Goodall's principal fields of teaching and research are English literature, cultural history and scholarly editing.

'He has authored two academic books, High Culture, Popular Culture: the Long Debate and An Annotated Bibliography of Chaucer's Monk's Tale and Nun's Priest's Tale, and a textbook on George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four.

'Professor Goodall is also the editor of AUMLA, the journal of the Australasian Language and Literature Association, and has published many book chapters, refereed journal articles and reviews on a wide range of topics.'

As a teacher, Professor Goodall has great experience as a convenor, lecturer and tutor at all levels of the undergraduate and postgraduate program and has supervised five postgraduate research students to completion.

'At Macquarie, Professor Goodall was the first member of the English Department to offer a unit via Open Universities Australia and has taken an innovative approach to offering a combination of text, image and film to internal and external students, including units studied fully online.

'This experience in distance education is particularly important to USQ, given our excellent reputation around the world as a leader in online learning.'

Professor Lovegrove said Professor Goodall will commence at USQ at the end of July.

'Professor Goodall's ability to inspire, motivate and promote a positive culture was highly prized at Macquarie and I am looking forward to working with him closely at USQ.'

Professor Goodall replaces Professor Maurice French who stepped down from the position of Dean in February 2007.
