Delightful performance assured in final twilight recital

A charming program of 20th and 21st century works will be performed by renowned flutist Karen Lonsdale and pianist Kerry Nian in the final West-Star Motors Twilight Recital for 2007 at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) on Wednesday 21 November.

A graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium, Karen is an accomplished performer, playing regularly as the Principal Flute with the Queensland Orchestra.

The evening's recital will include works by leading American composers Eldin Burton, Charles Griffes, Lowell Liebermann, Katherine Hoover, Gary Schocker and Aaron Copland.

'They are very melodious, beautiful pieces,' Karen said. 'Audiences will be hearing something fresh.'

'One of the pieces is a very famous work which is not often performed in Queensland, Duo for Flute and Piano, by Aaron Copland.

'There are some pieces by Kathryn Hoover, she is quite well known in Australia and I have worked to introduce pieces to audiences here in Queensland.

'I recently performed pieces composed by Kathryn in Brisbane. It went over so well audiences were asking for a full recording of her works,' she said.

Two solos will be performed by Karen including Soliloquy for Solo Flute by Lowell Liebermann and Winter Spirits for Solo Flute by Katherine Hoover.

Karen will then be joined by well-known accompanist Kerry Nian on piano to perform Sonatina for Flute and Piano, Poem for Flute and Piano and Three Minute Sonata for Flute and Piano by Gary Schocker.

'Gary writes almost in a jazzy style; its very light music, very pretty and melodic. I'm almost certain he is the most published living composer for flute and a wonderful flute player himself,' Karen said.

Karen received a Regional Arts Development Fund grant to attend the National Flute Association Convention in America in 2006 and 2007.

'The conventions both had more than 2000 flute players,' Karen said.

'I got to meet flute players from around America and got to hear Gary Schocker play. It was an amazing experience.'
