22nd Keith Willey Award for student journalism
The 2007 Keith Willey Award for student journalism will be presented to the third year journalism student with the highest academic achievement on Wednesday 17 October 2007.
2007 is the 22nd year of the presentation of the Keith Willey Award, named in honour of the first, three time winner of a Walkley Award for journalism.
During his distinguished career, Mr Willey worked on daily newspapers from Cairns to Launceston and from Sydney to Darwin and Adelaide. He covered the historic hanging of convicted murderer Ronald Ryan and the disappearance of Prime Minister Harold Holt.
As a foreign correspondent for the Sunday Sun, he reported on the wars in Vietnam and the Middle East. He also filed stories from the South Pacific, Papua New Guinea, Cambodia and Malaysia.
Mr Willey, who was a prolific author, taught at the then Darling Downs Institute of Advanced Education in 1983-84 before his death.
The Keith Willey Award, instigated by the Willey family and administered by the Faculty of Arts, is presented to the journalism student with the highest academic achievement in the first two years of his or her program.
This year's award will be presented on Wednesday, October 17, at a function in the Faculty of Arts, room Q402, from 12.30pm.
The guest speakers are two USQ journalism graduates, Shelley Lloyd (ABC Radio Queensland regional news editor and newsreader) and Craig Johnstone (former deputy editor of the Courier Mail, and Head of Media, Department of the Premier and Cabinet).
