Celebrating music written by women for women

Music lovers will be given an insight into the history of women and music, when visiting American musician, Lauren Pelon performs at the USQ Performance Centre on Tuesday 27 March 2007.

The West-Star Motors Twilight Recital will open the Performance Centre's 2007 season of music, with Ms Pelon bringing her unique style to USQ for the first time.

' will be performing ‘Women in Music: Someone Will Remember US', which traces the story of women in music and features music from across the world,' Ms Pelon said.

'Crossing the boundaries of time, distance and culture, I sing and play approximately 25 ancient and modern instruments, some of which were traditionally played by women, some forbidden to women.'

A vast number of instruments will be featured in the recital including the lute, lyre, hurdy-gurdy, pennywhistles, ocarina, Kiowa courting flute, eagle bone flute, schreirerpfeife, shawm, rackett, concertina, and MIDI-pedalboard.

Currently residing in the United States of America, Ms Pelon studied the history of music and instrumentation both in America and overseas.

'I have performed in St. Petersburg, Russia at the Russian Institute for History and the Arts, the Conservatory of Music in Almaty, Kazakhstan and in programs throughout the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada and China.

'This particular performance will feature music from ancient Greece, medieval Europe and contemporary Africa, America and Estonia.'

Box Office Manager at the USQ Performance Centre Michelle Fox said that the concert was the ideal way to kick of an exciting music season for the Centre.

'To have someone of Ms Pelon's calibre at USQ is terrific and we are all looking forward to her performance, which fittingly coincides with International Women's Month,' she said.

'The concert will run for one hour and will conclude with a ‘meet the artist' reception in the foyer, where audience members will have a chance to meet Ms Pelon.
