Music for lunch at USQ

The sound of eight talented violinists echoed through the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) Concert Hall yesterday in the first performance of the free lunchtime concert series.

Music for Lunch is an ongoing series of concerts open to the public featuring university staff, students and visiting musicians.

USQ Music Lecturer Marilyn Meier-Kapavale said the series was a good opportunity for the Toowoomba community to experience up-and-coming and established musical performers.

'It's a chance to hear some great musicians and escape the daily grind,' she said.

Famous Australian composer and pianist Larry Sitsky is a highlight on the concert calendar and will perform the Anton Rubinstein Theme & Variations on Thursday 13 September 2007.

'We're really privileged to have him perform,' Marilyn said.

'Most students would have played something by him as kids or teenagers.'

Piano and voice students will step back in time to the 19th Century to present A Chopin Celebration in costume on Wednesday 24 October 2007.

'It will have a set to suit the era and the costumes to reflect the times with the big skirts and everything,' Marilyn said.

The concert series runs each Wednesday from 1–2pm in the USQ Concert Hall (Q Block) during the semester except for a performance on Monday 6 August and Thursday 13 September.
