Education Dean to deliver Professorial Lecture

USQ Education Dean Professor Nita Temmerman will address USQ students and the public at the annual McGregor College Professorial Lecture this Tuesday (5 June, 2007).

Professor Temmerman will present Arts Education and its Contribution to the Development of Australia's Creative, Ideas Economy, which will give people the chance to listen to one of the University's newest deans.

'She started at the University this year and this Professorial Lecture is her inaugural lecture at USQ,' Group Manager in Student Affairs Barbara Lawrence said.

'I have read her address and I know that it is something that a lot of people will find very interesting.'

Held at the McGregor College for nearly 20 years, Ms Lawrence added that the Professorial Lecture was important for both academics and students.

'The McGregor College Professorial Lecture is always given by a new dean or professor at the University,' she said.

'It is an opportunity for the students and academics to get to know each other and is a good chance for students and the public to hear from a University dean.

'Over the years we have had some distinguished people, including Vice-Chancellor Professor Bill Lovegrove and Professor Bruce Horsfield present lectures.'

Professor Temmerman said that she was looking forward to the lecture and giving her maiden address at the University.

'I am really pleased that USQ has this particular event in place,' she said.

'Being a new dean I was invited to present and this will be my first formal lecture at the University.

'I will discuss the value of being engaged with the arts and presenting the arts as an important form of education.'

Prior to commencing at USQ, Professor Temmerman held several senior managerial roles in the university sector, including at the University of Wollongong, NSW and Deakin University in Victoria.

She is also a member of the Australian Council of Deans of Education, the Australia Council for the Arts and the International and Australian Society for Music Education.

The McGregor College Professorial Lecture will take place in the McGregor College Dining Hall on Baker Street, beginning at 7:30pm.
