Documentary screening to promote peace

USQ Springfield students will come together to promote peace at a special event at the University campus this Thursday (August 9, 2007).

Organised by Springfield second-year education student Mike Lubans, a special screening of the documentary, I Know I'm Not Alone will be shown at the campus along with a number of other activities designed to bring the University together.

'The documentary was made by musician Michael Franti, who travelled to Baghdad and Afghanistan to see the human cost of war as opposed to the financial cost of war,' Mike said.

'I watched the documentary and was moved by it so much that I wanted to share it with more people.

'Being a student at Springfield I decided to organise an afternoon of unity by having a public showing of the documentary along with some other activities including a sausage sizzle, drum circle and art exhibition.'

Mike added that the event was an opportunity for the University and the community to engage in a day of artistic expression.

'There will also be live music and three large canvases on which students and the public will be able to draw what they feel.

'This is a chance for people to express themselves through art and music and unite as a University campus.'

An emotionally charged documentary, Mike hoped that by showing I Know I'm Not Alone people would consider what has often being forgotten, the human cost of war.

'It is not a political day, I just want to generate thought on the human cost of war,' he said.

'This thought, generated through the emotion of the documentary can then be put into the art pieces that will be created on the day.'

The documentary screening will get underway in the USQ Springfield auditorium from 12pm, with both students and the general public encouraged to attend.

Media are also welcome to view the screening.
