Leading female pianist presents first Toowoomba recital

USQ's newly appointed Lecturer in Piano, Dr Marilyn Meier-Kapavale, will present her debut recital in Toowoomba on Wednesday 13 June 2007.

Described as one of Australia's leading contemporary pianists, Marilyn will play a number of loved and well known pieces during her recital, including work by Beethoven and Chopin.

Recently moving from Camden in New South Wales, Marilyn is thoroughly enjoying living in Toowoomba and said she is looking forward to performing in front of a Toowoomba audience.

'I am really excited about performing in Toowoomba for the first time. I have selected a number of pieces which are my personal favourites, pieces I love to perform and know very well.

'I really enjoy teaching, but I also love to perform. I was given a toy grand piano when I was four and when I went to kindergarten I would come home and try to play the nursery rhymes on it,' she said.

Since commencing her music career, Marilyn has worked with Ludwig Hoffman in Germany and at the age of 15 she was won the ABC-TV Quest 78.

She then moved to the USA to study with Bela Siki at the University of Washington, Seattle.

During her time in the USA Marilyn broadcast extensively on radio and television, and she also won a swag of national prizes.

Marilyn has also performed as a soloist with Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Youth and the Cincinnati Philharmonic.

Marilyn was a Finalist in the Young Australian of the Year Award in 1988 and has received an Australian Achiever award and a Young Achiever's Arts Award from Channel Ten.

She has performed with the ABC Symphony Orchestras, the Australian Chamber Orchestra and in recital and chamber music in Australia, Japan, Europe, USA and the South Pacific.

She has also released three CDs "Just Chopin", "Liszt Legends" and "Country Gardens".
