$67,000 to Engineering and Surveying Scholars

Eleven students from the University of Southern Queensland's (USQ) Faculty of Engineering and Surveying will receive $67,000 worth of scholarships at a special presentation tomorrow (Wednesday 21 March 2007).

 

Scholarship recipients, representatives from businesses sponsoring the scholarships, school principals, USQ staff and parents will attend the event.

Recipient of the Women in Engineering Scholarship, Katherine Beeston, is one of the eleven students who will be presented with her scholarship tomorrow.

Katherine said she was excited to be awarded the scholarship, valued at $8000.

'It will help with books and stuff and I've bought a new computer,' Miss Beeston said.

Coming from St Ursula's in Toowoomba, Miss Beeston said she was strongly encouraged at school to apply for scholarships.

'They all said just apply, even if you don't think you'll get one. I applied for five and I got one so I'm pretty happy,' she said.

Miss Beeston chose to do a Bachelor of Engineering with a major in Mechanical Engineering.

'It seemed like an interesting career path,' she said.

Other scholarships that will be awarded at the ceremony include the Trimble – Ultimate Positioning Scholarship for high academic achievement, valued at $2,000, which will be awarded to James Mitchell.

Regional scholarship's valued at $3000 each will be awarded to Mr Josiah Murphy, Mr Anthony Reimers and Mr Matthew Richardson.

Recipients of the $8000 each Faculty of Engineering and Surveying Scholarships include Mr David Breadsell, Mr Jason Clarke, Mr Barry Tschirpig, Mr Christopher Jerrems, Mr Christopher Kelly, Mr Bede Wilson.

Enrolments for the Engineering and Surveying faculty in 2007 are up 13 per cent on 2006 figures.

The scholarship presentation commences at 11:30am on Wednesday 21 March 2007 in the Faculty Common Room, Z 465. Lunch will be served at 12.45pm following the presentations. Media are welcome to attend.
