Associate Professors recognised for excellence
USQ Associate Professors Frank Young and Armando Apan's passion for Spatial Science has been recognised after they were both named as Fellows of the Spatial Science Institute (SSI).
The SSI is a professional association, formed following the amalgamation of several professional institutions, which services the needs of spatial professionals and gives them a voice in both the national and international arena, with 3370 members Australia wide.
Both received the honour for their contributions to Spatial Science and dedication to the industry in which they have made their careers.
'This is in recognition of service to Spatial Science and it is both an honour and a surprise to receive it,' Frank said.
'I was not expecting this at all; it never even occurred to me that I would be considered. The first I heard about it was when I received a letter from the Institute.'
After four decades associated with Spatial Science, Frank said that he was delighted to receive the recognition.
'I have been involved with Spatial Science for 40 years both as a student and a lecturer at USQ where I have been for 25 years,' he said.
'It is really nice to be acknowledged for what I have done for the industry.'
Meanwhile, Armando has taken a much different route to his honour, but said that he was also surprised by the announcement.
'I was very happy and excited about it and honoured, but it was also a humbling experience,' he said.
'I did not expect it though because I have only been in the industry for 10 years and there are a large number of other SSI members in Queensland that could have been named.'
Both members of the SSI since its inception in 2003, Frank and Armando were elevated to Fellows of the Institute following approval from their peers.
'I was nominated by someone in the SSI and then it was also seconded by people in the Institute,' Frank said.
'After that a submission was made on my behalf and I was made a Fellow of the SSI.'
While the honour is usually reserved for people nearing the end of their careers, neither plan to end their time in the industry just yet.
'I have never been anywhere (USQ) longer,' Frank said.
'I just enjoy work and enjoy lecturing, so I want to continue what I am doing and be involved in Spatial Science for a while yet.'
