400 years of music

Two of Australia's most accomplished concert performers will bring 400 years of music together in the West-Star Motors Twilight Violin Recital at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ).

Renowned violinist Mary Nemet will join award-winning pianist Jane Kelly to perform a blend of perennial favourites spanning four centuries.

'It's a bit like an overview of 400 years of violin music,' Miss Nemet said.

'You've got the 17th Century with Leclair, Mozart from the 18th Century, Mendelssohn in the 19th Century and Manuel de Falla from the 20th Century.'

The concert may be the first time the violin version of the Mendelssohn music has been performed in Australia, Miss Nemet said.

'I was very lucky to be able to get this music and I'm almost certain this will be an Australian premiere for the Mendelssohn pieces in this violin arrangement.

'I've never heard the Mendelssohn pieces performed before in Australia and I'm really looking forward to playing them.

'I've played in public thousands of times before and I like to try and do something fresh and interesting.'

The performance also marks Jane's return to the concert stage after taking time away to bring up her three sons. It will be the first time the two have performed together.

'Jane was well known as a pianist before she came to live in Toowoomba,' Miss Nemet said.

'When I was invited to do the recital I thought of Jane because she is one of the best pianists around. I've performed in Melbourne, Sydney, London and New York and she compares extremely well.'

Audiences will have a chance to meet the artists after the performance and enjoy some light refreshments.

The concert will take place at 6:00pm on Wednesday 15 August 2007 in the USQ Arts Theatre. Tickets are $14 for Adults, $11.50 concession and $6 for children. Bookings can be made by contacting the booking office on (07) 4631 1111 or email boxoffice@usq.edu.au.
