Alastair's looking to USQ

Toowoomba's Alastair Bell is one of more than 21,000 students across the state eagerly awaiting an offer from the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) this week (Thursday, 10 January 2008).

The OP 1 student from Christian Outreach College is aiming to secure a place in the University of Southern Queensland's (USQ) Bachelor of Biomedical Science program.

'I've always been interested in science,' Alastair said.

'It's a well renowned course and gives me a lot of options after I graduate.'

Alastair said he was attracted to USQ because of its academic reputation and the support provided under the University's Elite Athlete program, which will allow him to maintain his swimming commitments.

A member of the National Youth Team for Swimming Australia, Alastair will compete in the Olympic Trials in March this year.

'Going to USQ meant I could stay here and swim, and it's a very good University.'

USQ's Elite Athlete program is designed to give students access to support services to help them balance their uni work with sporting commitments.

Like many students in the local area Alastair has had some prior association with USQ through the Science and Engineering Challenge.

During his time at Christian Outreach College Alastair held positions of Sports Captain and Head Prefect.

While he is enjoying his holidays Alastair said he is keen to start life as a uni student.

'It'll be good to get back into doing something.'

Alastair is considering areas of medical research or post-graduate medicine once he completes his program.

QTAC will release offers on Thursday 10 January 2008. Offers will be published in selected newspapers on Friday 11 January 2008.
