Top Chinese student to call USQ home

One of China's top University students will call Toowoomba and USQ home for at least the next three years as part of an agreement between the University and the China Scholarship Council (CSC).

The CSC is a non-profit institution, which provides financial assistance to Chinese citizens wishing to study abroad in an effort to strengthen friendship and understanding between the Chinese and other countries.

Yinshuo Xu will complete her PhD in sustainable accounting at USQ after she was nominated by her Chinese University to take part in the initiative which enables China's top University students to study abroad.

'This is the first time that USQ will host a CSC recipient and because these positions are so competitive it is something that is very prestigious," Director of Research and Higher Degrees Dr Ren Yi said.

'Only the top 50 universities out of the 2011 in China can apply to send a student, so for USQ to have one of them is a great result.'

Arriving from The Central University of Finance and Economics in Beijing two weeks ago, Yinshuo has already started her PhD and according to Dr Yi is proof that USQ is continuing to boost their global reputation as an education leader.

'USQ already has a good reputation throughout the world for our research and being a part of something like this will only help that,' he said.

'This will further enhance the collaborative research and research training that we have with other universities around the globe and help USQ maintain its position as a top University.'

With China currently establishing themselves as a world leader and their influence only expected to increase, the CSC connection is also a way for USQ to foster greater relations for research with the Chinese, he said.

'Through this CSC joint partnership for research training we are receiving recognition from China and that is very important for the University.'

Dr Yi added that Yinshuo was expected to complete her PhD in three or four years with USQ hopeful that more Chinese students will be sent in the future.

'This is a partnership that we really want to foster so that in the years to come we can host more top students from China.'
