USQ holds inaugural indigenous art exhibition

The University of Southern Queensland's (USQ) Centre for Australian Indigenous Knowledges (CAIK) will host Toowoomba's first Indigenous art exhibition and cocktail party on Thursday September 4.

The exhibition will feature eight of Australia's top Indigenous artists and will be curatored by renowned Toowoomba artist and Downlands College Curator, Evan Hollis.

Exhibition Organiser, Maree Toombs, said the event aims to promote Australian Indigenous art and will feature a number of local and visiting artists including work by Mitjili Napurrula, Walala, Tjapaltjarri, Lorna Fencer Napurrula, Lily Kelly Napangardi and Ningura Napurrula.

'We have an outstanding selection of some of Australia's best Indigenous artists on show. Some of the works have travelled from as far as Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory and the Western Kimberleys,' Maree said.

'Toowoomba is home to some extremely talented artists and we hope that the exhibition will not only give exposure to these artists but show Toowoomba that we have some hugely talented people right on our doorstep.'

Those attending the exhibition will be entertained by renowned indigenous dance group Noonuccle Aboriginal Dance Troop.

The exhibition will be held in the Allison Dickson Lecture theatre foyer from 5.30pm on Thursday 4 September. Works will be available for sale on the night and proceeds will go to support next year's event.
