Hottest Indigenous artists exhibit for kids

Children from across the Darling Downs will have the rare opportunity to view art by some of Australia's leading contemporary Indigenous artists during the One Metre Eye Height exhibition at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ).

The exhibition will be presented as part of the annual Breez Finance Children's Festival and will be shown until 29 June 2008.

Exhibition Curator, Simon Mee, said the collection of work will showcase some of Australia's hottest Indigenous artists including local artist, Donna Moodie and Evan Hollis, along with visiting artists Archie Moore, Vernon Ah Kee and Christian Thompson.

'I have been interested in putting together an exhibition like this for sometime. There is a lot of exciting contemporary art being made by Indigenous people in Queensland. It's often passionate with something to say.

'I thought it was also important to show Indigenous art in a non stereotypical way to the community,' Simon said.

'USQ has brought a lot to Toowoomba – an engagement with contemporary Indigenous culture has both community and artistic benefits.

Local artist Evan Hollis is exhibiting a number of pieces that will capture the imagination of children through his mythical Gondwanaland creatures.

'he children who visit the exhibition will enjoy it because it is funny, relevant and passionate,'Simon said.

'ontemporary indigenous art is one of the most dynamic areas within Australian culture - we should be part of this!'

The exhibition will run from 26 May 2008 until 29 June 2008 in the USQ Arts Gallery. The exhibition is open to public and free.

A series of free, interactive workshops will also be offered in conjunction with this exhibition including Dreaming Our Land with Damien Kamholtz on Saturday 7 June 2008 from 2-3pm.

This hands-on-workshop will ask participating children to imagine their idea of the Australian land and then work together to create a painted mural incorporating mixed matched visions of today's Australia. No bookings necessary.
