Project risk consultant speaks at USQ

Engineers Australia (Queensland Division) and the University of Southern Queensland have extended an invitation to the public to attend a presentation by GHD Project Director of Defence, Malcolm Catchpole at Springfield campus on Monday, October 13.

USQ Springfield Engineering Coordinator Dr David Thorpe said the presentation would give people interested in risk management an insight as to how the government views and deals with risk and how they strike a balance between risk avoidance and risk management.

'The Queensland government is one of the largest purchasers of professional services in the state, which makes it critical for consultants to have an appreciation of how the government conducts itself as a client and as a statutory authority when it comes to risk management,' Dr Thorpe said.

'The presentation will assist consultants in advising government clients to make sound risk management decisions in areas like project management.'

Dr Thorpe said the GHD presenter Malcolm Catchpole has considerable experience working with a number of Queensland and Commonwealth departments.

'Malcolm is the Project Director – Defence in the Defence, Science and Aviation Group at the Brisbane office of GHD.

'His experience includes strategic management of a number of hospital redevelopment projects, review and auditing of project procurement and tendering procedures in relation to government capital works projects and development of a Commonwealth government risk assessment tool for aged care facilities.

'He has also coordinated and planned development for the Roma Street Parklands redevelopment and provided engineering and risk management services for a number of significant works in defence, health and other areas.

'Engineers Australia and USQ are pleased to offer the public and students the opportunity to learn from such a highly regarded industry professional.

'It is an excellent opportunity for personal professional development and to meet and network with other industry specialists.'
