Free talk by internationally renowned artist
Two visual artists' unique use of photography will form the basis of the University of Southern Queensland's (USQ) Art Gallery's current exhibition.
The One-Plus-One exhibition brings together a variety of diverse photographic works by local artist Sarah Ryan and internationally acclaimed German artist Ingo Gerken.
Sarah will host a free artist floor talk tomorrow (Wednesday, 19 March 2008) were she will discus her unconventional use of Lenticular photography.
'I am one of a few artists worldwide using digital lenticular photography. Lenticular images create an optical three-dimensional effect and or flow of motion within an image.
'They are most commonly associated with 3D postcards, greetings cards and novelty items and they are primarily produced by companies who own patents on the specialist production processes.
'Extending the lenticular medium beyond its novelty usages and associations forms an integral component to my art practice.'
Sarah said her work as a photographer comments on contemporary lifestyles, and this exhibition will present a creative interaction between the two artists based on a core interest to create a visual dialogue.
'There is no specific agenda to the exhibition other than 'one plus one' i.e. one artist selects another artist that they'd like to work with. We have both however stayed within the medium of photography for this exhibition.'
Sarah has exhibited her work in Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart and New Zealand and overseas at the Gitte Weise Galerie in Berlin.
She has earned international recognition for her work and recently been awarded a prestigious one year artist residency at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien Australia Council Studio in Berlin.
In 2001 she won the City of Hobart Photo/Digital Media Prize and in 2003 she was awarded an Ian Potter Cultural Trust Grant to undertake a residency at the Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris.
Her work is held in collections including Art Gallery of New South Wales, National Gallery of Victoria, Artbank, Australian Consulate, Frankfurt, Germany, Hobart City Council, Griffith Artworks and private collections.
The exhibition opened on 13 March and will run until 18 April 2008.
