Leading ABC journalist talks at University tonight

Geraldine Doogue, host of the ABC's well known program Compass, will talk about personal and career success at the University of Southern Queensland's (USQ) Concannon College Oration tonight (Tuesday 14 October).

Held annually, the event is open to the public and invites speakers from the professions, arts, science and church to address current issues.

Geraldine is one of Australia's foremost journalists. In 2000 she was awarded a Churchill Fellowship for social and cultural reporting, and a year later she was recognised with an Officer in the Order of Australia for services to the community and media.

Having planned a career in teaching, an impulse decision to apply for a job as a cadet journalist launched her into a media career which has spanned more than 30 years.

Geraldine has worked in television, print, and radio both in Australia and internationally. She has hosted a variety of programs dealing with current affair and international politics.

Geraldine played a major role in ABC televisions coverage of the Gulf War. During this time she was also awarded two Penguin Awards and a United Nations Media Peace Prize.

The Orations have hosted a variety of notable guest speakers since its inception in 1991 including The Honourable Justice Michael Kirby and Peter Cosgrove.

The public are invited to attend Geraldine's talk. The event commences at 7:30pm in the Alison Dickson Lecture Theatre tonight (14 October).
