USQ's Phoenix Radio wins community achievement award

In recognition of their outstanding contribution to the Greater Springfield community the University of Southern Queensland's (USQ) Phoenix Radio has been presented with a community achievement award by the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce.

USQ Bachelor of Applied Media (BAM) Lecturer Ashley Jones received the Bendigo Bank Community Achievement Award on behalf of the community online radio station at the inaugural awards ceremony last Friday.

'I was greatly honoured to receive this award on behalf of the University and Phoenix Radio,' Mr Jones said.

'The award really belongs to the students and community members who staff the station week after week in a voluntary capacity.'

With less than a year of operation under their belt Phoenix Radio has become an integral part of the Ipswich and Springfield communities, providing important information and assistance for people living in the area.

'Since our launch in February we have partnered with the local community to produce a number of high quality programs including Ipswich Connections, a joint effort between the University and the Cerebral Palsy League.

'The program is hosted by Queenslanders with a physical disability aiming to shed new light on the challenges faced by people with special needs.

'It provides a much needed resource for all disabilities in support of the Greater Springfield and Ipswich communities.

'Wired is a community partnered program hosted by two local musicians and geared at showcasing Australia's amazing array of talented unsigned bands.

'Through the program, presenters Michael Looke and Jonathan Geange hope to give up and coming bands the opportunity to reach record labels, agents and venues.'

Mr Jones said the station would continue to work with the local community to produce shows of interest and assistance to people living in the Greater Springfield and Ipswich area.

'We are always open to hearing from people in the community who have ideas for shows. We team them up with BAM student producers to get new programs underway.'
