University supports breast cancer research

The colour pink will take over the University of Southern Queensland's (USQ) Springfield campus during the month of October as staff and students raise funds and breast cancer awareness during the Pink Ribbon season.

USQ in partnership with Metropolitan West Regional School Sport will host a number of events and activities throughout October to raise money for Cancer Council Australia to fund breast cancer research.

USQ Tourism lecturer and Pink Ribbon coordinator Frances Cassidy said every Monday during October would be known as Butterfly Monday.

'We will sell little cakes on Monday mornings and every Friday we will hold raffles for items such as meat trays, seafood trays and grocery trays,' Ms Cassidy said.

'We will also sell raffle tickets across the entire month for our major prize of one night accommodation for two including breakfast or dinner for four to the value of $300, kindly donated by Niche Luxury Hotel in Springfield.

'Pink Ribbon merchandise, pins and bands will also be on sale on every level of the USQ Springfield building and in the library.

'We will also hold an educational session about breast cancer during the month followed by a sausage sizzle.

'So many families have been touched by breast cancer at some time and this makes fundraising and awareness very important.

'Anyone who would like to come along to participate in events, donate prizes or purchase a cake or merchandise is welcome.'
