Steele Rudd's great granddaughter just one of the residents

Although she lives on the college named after her great grandfather, Kate Davis is adamant that she gets no special treatment and is just one of the residents like everyone else.

The first year University of Southern Queensland (USQ) Education student is the great granddaughter of Australian literary legend Steele Rudd and by pure coincidence lives on the college that bears his name.

'When I decided to go to university here I came out with my dad and had a look at the different colleges,' Kate said.

'We knew Steele Rudd College was at USQ because dad donated a painting to the college after it first opened but we didn't make a conscious decision for me to live here, it was basically because I really liked the college.'

Born in Drayton in 1868, Arthur Hoey Davis, who later became known as Steele Rudd, is one of Australia's most famous authors, penning twenty-four books and six plays, the most famous of which, On Our Selection, has proved to be a piece of timeless Australian literature.

Despite admitting that she has not followed her great grandfather's history as closely as some other family members, Kate is aware of his significance not only locally but nationally as well.

'My sisters in particular have taken a real interest in our family history as has my dad and through them I am getting an appreciation of who my great grandfather was,' the 21 year-old said.

'Dad in particular is really proud of his heritage and the more I learn the more I am interested in my great grandfather and our family history.'

While Kate says that she receives no special treatment, she did admit that been Steele Rudd's great granddaughter did have its perks.

'I went out to Rudd's pub in Nobby with the college and while I was there everyone shouted me a beer, so that was nice,' she said.

Kate has no plans to leave the college while completing her degree and is looking forward to spending the next three years on-campus.

'I want to stay on college for the whole time I am at USQ as it is just a great place to live.

'A lot of people said that I have come full circle by living here it doesn't feel like that for me, I am just happy to be able to live on the college.'
