Non-school leavers get a taste of university life

If you have always wanted to go to university but found the prospect too daunting, the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) Student For a Day program might just be the experience you need.

The University is extending an invitation for anyone interested in taking a closer look at student life to attend the program at the Springfield campus on Tuesday, 13 May from 9am to 2.45pm.

Student For a Day is designed to help the attendees decide whether university is for them.

Lecturer in Communications and English as a Second Language, Nick Todd, said the program would give non-school leavers a taste of what university might be like.

'The aim of the day is to enable non-school leavers to make an informed decision about whether to apply to study at USQ Springfield,' Nick said.

'School leavers receive a lot of information about university life through their school, but often there isn't much opportunity for non-school leavers to receive the same kind of information.

'Through the Student For a Day program non-school leavers will be able to experience what university will be like first hand.

'They will learn what is expected by lecturers, what support services are available to students, experience a lecture or tutorial and be able to tour the campus facilities.'

Nick said the day also provides the attendees with an opportunity to have all their questions answered.

'Feedback from our previous programs has been excellent and in 2007 over sixty students participated in our four sessions. We have current students studying with us who first visited USQ as Student For a Day attendees.

'The program suits anyone thinking about embarking upon tertiary education. It will help prospective students make an informed choice about coming to study at university.

'Anyone can register to come along and be a USQ Springfield Student For a Day.'
