More than 18,000 plastic bags will be taken out of the environment and converted into gift bags for delegates attending the 2007 International Women’s Conference in September.

Local knitters are invited to help make gift bags for the 300 expected conference delegates as part of the Knitting the Community Together project.

Delegates from across the world will receive the bags at the Education, Employment and Everything…the triple layers of a woman’s life conference, which is one of the University of Southern Queensland’s 40th Anniversary projects.

Coordinator of the Knitting the Community Together project Rebecca Manteit from Young Women’s Place said the aim is to involve the community and help the environment.

'Young Women’s Place thought this would be a unique idea as part of their sponsorship of the conference,' Miss Manteit said.

'We are trying to recruit people who can knit to complete one bag each.

'This type of project has never been done before on such a large scale and with so much community involvement,' she said.

One delegate bag uses approximately 60 shredded plastic bags. The project team is also seeking help from people to assist with collection and shredding.

'We want to get a nucleus around the groups who will collect bags and shred for the knitters.

'We’ve designed a pattern in conjunction with the Harlaxton Neighbourhood Centre and are aiming for 200 bags by the end of June,' she said.

The bags will include sponsor badges on the front, a personalised tag and information on sponsors and community services inside.

'Each bag will have a personalised tag informing of who made the bag, the bag collectors, shredders and a motivational phrase.'

Miss Mantiet said she was hoping to hold bag-making classes at the Young Women’s Place, to answer any questions and help the project along.
