First year Law student, Julia Gynn’s screams could be heard across Bribie Island on Sunday when she was called to collect her 1st place (20 – 24 years short course division) trophy after competing in the fourth race of the Bribie Island Triathlon Series.

Julia was competing in her 2nd ever triathlon as part of the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) Springfield campus team on Sunday (14 March).

'I was so proud of myself I think the entire field could hear me scream when my name was called out to collect my trophy,' Julia said.

Julia said she had started running to train for the Bridge to Brisbane last year and had competed in her first triathlon only two weeks ago.

'I’ve always hated sports, but I wanted to do something just for me, that would give me a sense of achievement,' she said.

'Triathlon is great because it really pushes you to be at your best across a number of disciplines and is a wonderful way of alleviating the stress of studying and raising my 3 year-old son Kobi.'

The USQ Springfield Teams have been blitzing the field at recent events including placing 1st in the Corporate Teams long course division on Sunday.

Not to be outdone, Psychology Lecturer Dr Taryn Swan finally placed for the first time after 3 years of competing, coming 2nd in her age group for short course.

USQ student, Jae Martin placed 2nd in his age group for short course, Springfield campus Director Doug Fraser placing 3rd in his age group for short course and USQ student Anthony Wynne placed 3rd in his age group for short course.

The team will next compete in the USQ Toowoomba Biathlon Series.
