1000 Year 10 students attend Fraser Coast Careers Expo
About 1000 Year 10 students from Hervey Bay and Maryborough schools attended the 2011 Fraser Coast Careers Expo in Hervey Bay last week (July 21).
The students visited the annual expo to explore possible careers and tertiary study options available to them.
Representatives from universities and tertiary education institutions, large and small employers and training providers were on hand to give advice and information to the students.
Tas Webber, from the University of Southern Queensland Fraser Coast, said the careers expo was a once-a-year opportunity to see what was on offer locally.
'The Year 10 students attended the expo as part of their SET Plan work,' Mr Webber said.
'It helps them get an idea of what they can become and what they need to study to achieve their career goals.
'The expo also provided hands-on experience in a range of industry areas.
'For instance, the USQ Fraser Coast stand gave them the chance to use microscopes to look at red blood cells and an artery. The interactive models of the human heart, brain and eye were popular too.'
Participants of the ‘try a trade’ interactive displays were able to test out their hairdressing skills on mannequin heads under the direction of staff and students from the Wide Bay Institute of TAFE.
The carpentry workshop, where students put together picture frames, was also popular.
