It is his passion for the student experience that motivates Mr Carl Rallings, the new Pro Vice-Chancellor (Student Management).

Starting at the University last month, Mr Rallings came to USQ via Southern Cross University in Lismore and has settled in well.

'Everyone at USQ has been very warm and welcoming and I am looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead.'

With a wealth of experience in higher education, Mr Rallings has come to USQ excited about the prospect of building on the work which is already been undertaken at the University.

'I have been involved in student management roles for 20 years and during this time I have also worked at the Queensland University of Technology and the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom.

'During my career I have been very focussed on delivering strategic, thoughtful and effective services to students regardless of where and how they may be studying.

'It is important that I build on what has already been achieved at the University and continue the course that has been set.'

In particular Mr Rallings said that one of his most exciting challenges was putting into place the systems and processes to support the implementation of the Realising our Potential (ROP) project.

'The most exciting challenge will be intensifying interactions with our students particularly at the critical points in the student lifecycle.'

One area of the student experience Mr Rallings wishes to enhance is the University’s first year student experience.

'The orientation and transition period is a critical time for all new students. I would like to ensure there is a meaningful and innovative program of activities and services encouraging first year students to establish strong connections with the University.'
