Students set sights on future careers in science
Harristown High School students enjoy the challenge |
Spending a day experimenting with electricity and wind propelled cars is right up the ally of grade 10 Harristown High School students Brooke Duncan, Maddy Bolitho and Georgia Bayntin.
Already planning big careers in archaeology, vet science and speech pathology, the girls didn’t waste any time throwing themselves into each activity at the University’s annual Science and Engineering Challenge.
'It’s an awesome event,' budding young veterinarian Maddy Bolitho said.
'It’s a good opportunity to do something for our school. We enjoy the teamwork and all the experiments we get to do.'
This year’s challenges include Puff Puff Golf, Flight of the Navigator, Escape from the Lost World, Gold Fever, Mission to Mars, Eco-Habitech, Crypto Cracking Cronies and Future Power.
Each day eight schools have competed against each other and the team with the most points receives a trophy. The three highest scoring teams from the Challenge will go on to compete in the Super Challenge against teams from northern New South Wales and Brisbane.
Students from Toowoomba, Warwick and the Lockyer Valley battled it out for first prize which was taken out by Lockyer District High School, closely followed by Harristown State High School in second place and Warwick State High School in third.
The 2010 Science and Engineering Challenge will conclude tomorrow.
