For many of University of Southern Queensland’s international students, learning about the Australian way of life can be as intimidating as a redback spider on the outhouse dunny.

So when the international students expressed interest in talking with Toowoomba locals and sharing each other’s culture, the ‘Chat with the Locals’ program was born.

The program is run by the Open Access College and the Residential colleges and lets international students meet with Australians from all walks of life to learn about Australian culture and practice speaking skills.

So far, the students have learnt about the Australian bush, sports, movies and weddings with the next Chat with the Locals to discuss the beach.

One of the event organisers, Sarah Withers, said the evenings have had great feedback and each Chat with Locals has attracted more than 60 attendees.

‘It’s about sharing culture; they learn about ours and we learn about theirs,’ Miss Withers said.

‘We have a very close community at USQ although the international students want more opportunity to get out and mix with the Toowoomba community.

‘It’s definitely been a success; everyone has had a great time.’

The sessions are held on the last Wednesday of each month at the Recreation Hall in McGregor College at USQ Toowoomba.

The next session will be held on Wednesday, October 26 from 6.45pm to 7.45pm.

Newcomers are always welcome, contact Miss Withers on 4631 5735 or Sarah.Withers@usq.edu.au for more information.
